The prostate is a gland only found in men and it lies just beneath the bladder. The tube that passes urine from the bladder, the urethra, runs through the middle of the prostate.
In about 5-14% of men older than 18 years old, the prostate gland gets irritated (inflammation), causing pain or discomfort in the lower pelvic region. The pain can be felt at the base of the penis, around the anus, just above the pubic bone and/or in the lower back. Pain may spread to the penis and testes. Passing stools (feces) can also be painful.
Sometimes, increased frequency of passing urine and problems having or keeping an erection are present too. All these symptoms may last a long time (chronic), although they may 'come and go' or vary in severity. The causes of this medical condition are not fully understood and this group of symptoms is called Chronic Prostatitis/Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome (CP/CPPS).
